Japan’s two biggest airlines said on March 3 they have canceled a total of 32 flights to Europe up to March 5 and will reroute some other flights to avoid travel over Russia’s airspace.

The moves by All Nippon Airways Co. (ANA) and Japan Airlines Co. (JAL), following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, will affect about 1,150 passengers.

ANA will cancel 12 commercial and four cargo flights departing Japan on March 4 and 5, including those between Haneda Airport in Tokyo and London, and between Haneda and Paris.

For flights from Narita Airport in Chiba Prefecture bound for Brussels, ANA will take a longer route over Central Asia to avoid Russian airspace.

ANA had already canceled eight commercial and cargo flights departing Japan on March 3.

JAL canceled 16 commercial and cargo flights departing on March 3 and 4, including those connecting Haneda and Paris.

The two JAL flights between Haneda and London on March 4 will take a detour toward Alaska.

JAL had earlier canceled four commercial flights between Haneda and Moscow.

Both ANA and JAL said they will make decisions on future flights based on the changing situation.

Moscow has banned European Union members from using Russian airspace, leading to a number of canceled flights connecting European cities and Japan.
