Osaka Prefecture reported a record 3,692 fresh cases of COVID-19 on Jan. 15 as the spread of the Omicron variant continued to surge around the nation. Okinawa and Hiroshima prefectures also reported record daily tallies.
In Osaka, prefectural authorities said the figure broke the daily record of 3,004 set on Sept. 1, 2021.
In Tokyo, the metropolitan government reported 4,561 fresh COVID-19 cases on Jan. 15, up from 4,051 the day before.
Another daily record was also broken in Okinawa, the southernmost prefecture, with 1,829 fresh cases among islanders on Jan. 15. It was the fourth straight day for Okinawa to post more than 1,000 cases.
Okinawa prefectural government officials were also informed by the U.S. military of 282 new COVID-19 cases among military personnel.
Hiroshima Prefecture, which like Okinawa is now covered by pre-emergency measures, reported a record 1,212 cases, the first time the prefecture in western Japan has exceeded 1,000 cases in a day.
