Tokyo confirmed 76 fresh cases of COVID-19 on Dec. 29, the first time for the daily count to top 50 since Oct. 16, when 65 were reported.
The same day, Osaka Prefecture reported 61 new cases, the second straight day for the figure to exceed 50 following the 51 logged the day before.
It also marked the first time for the daily count to top 60 in the prefecture since Nov. 11, when 64 cases were reported.
Tokyo’s latest tally was up 36 from Wednesday last week and marked the 12th consecutive day for the figure to rise from the same day of the preceding week.
It brought the daily average of new cases in the capital over the week through Dec. 29 to 44.9, or 157 percent of the figure for the preceding week.
No new deaths from the novel coronavirus were reported in Tokyo and Osaka Prefecture.
The number of patients in the capital with symptoms serious enough to require special breathing equipment dropped by one from the previous day to one.
