UBE, Yamaguchi Prefecture--The municipal government will host an immersive citywide event themed on the most recent “Evangelion” anime feature film beginning on Dec. 24.
Ube is the hometown of Hideaki Anno, chief director of “Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time,” which became a smash hit this year.
With many locations depicted in the latest installment of the anime franchise, the city has become a popular destination for fans.
Mayor Keiji Shinozaki announced the project at a news conference on Nov. 29 at Ube-Shinkawa Station on the JR Ube Line, which appears in the film under the same name.
“We want to use (this event) to boost exchanges with visitors in the hometown of chief director Anno,” Shinozaki said. “We want to keep hosting events on a continuing basis.”
The event will celebrate the fact that the film has now raked in more than 10 billion yen ($87.9 million). It will also mark the 100th anniversary of Ube’s city status.
As part of the event, people are encouraged to participate in a stamp rally by collecting digital stamps at the station and nine other locations in and outside the city.
An original rubber stamp, co-produced by the city government and West Japan Railway Co., will also be available at the station.
Starting March next year, about 20 restaurants will serve food themed on the anime franchise, while more than 30 models created by the renowned figure manufacturer Kaiyodo Co. will be displayed at the Tokiwa Koen park.
