Tokyo confirmed 21 fresh cases of COVID-19 on Dec. 1, up 16 from a week ago, as well as one related death.

The latest tally brought the daily average of new infections in the capital over the week through Dec. 1 to 17.3, or 121 percent of the figure for the preceding week.

The patient who died was in his 50s, according to metropolitan government officials.

The number of serious cases in the capital requiring special breathing equipment dropped by two from the previous day to four.
