Aoko Matsuda won in the best collection category at this year’s World Fantasy Awards for the English translation of her short stories “Where the Wild Ladies Are” (translated by Polly Barton), its original publisher Chuokoron-Shinsha Inc. announced.
The U.S. awards are considered one of the three most prestigious science fiction and fantasy literary prizes along with the Hugo and Nebula Awards.
Past winners include Stephen King.
From Japan, Haruki Murakami won in the Novel category for his “Kafka on the Shore” in 2006, while anime director Hayao Miyazaki received the Life Achievement award in 2019.
Born in 1979, Matsuda is a writer and translator.
“Stackable,” her first book published in 2013, was nominated for the Yukio Mishima Prize and other awards.
Released in 2016, the winning title is a collection of 17 short stories that depict women from folktales and ghost stories resurrected in modern times and follow their energetic actions.
