Odakyu Electric Railway Co. is seeking to win over young riders for life, announcing on Nov. 8 that its child fare will be set at 50 yen (44 cents) for all sections from next spring.
It will mark the first time a railway company has set a regular child fare below half of the adult fare, an Odakyu official said.
Odakyu railway foresees a declining population living along its line in the future.
“We hope that children use our trains and have a friendly feeling toward them, and would like them to live longer along our line into the future,” the official said.
The lower child fare is available to elementary school children aged between 6 and 12 through IC cards only.
Currently, Odakyu's child fare is half the adult fare. When the lower price takes effect, the minimum child's charge for a regular train ticket will be lower by 13 yen and the child's fare between Shinjuku and Odawara stations by 395 yen.
The 50-yen fare won’t apply to paper tickets.
