The health ministry has asked municipal governments to prepare to start administering third shots of novel coronavirus vaccines at the beginning of December.

In a notice dated Oct. 20, the ministry called for vaccination vouchers to be delivered to those eligible by around Nov. 22 so inoculations can start on Dec. 1.

The additional shot, sometimes referred to as a booster, will be given to those who received the second shot about eight months ago. The ministry expects that health care workers who received the second shot in March or April will be the first in line.

A panel of ministry experts will officially decide who will receive the third shots based on current scientific knowledge and evidence, and the situation overseas. Elderly citizens are expected to follow health care workers.
