Tokyo confirmed its lowest number of fresh daily novel coronavirus infections this year with 29 cases on Oct. 18, metropolitan government officials said. The previous record low of 40 was marked the day before.

The latest tally was down 20 from a week ago and brought the daily average of new infections in the capital over the week through Oct. 18 to 57.6, or 52.7 percent of the figure for the preceding week.

Metropolitan government officials also reported six deaths among patients in their 60s to 80s in Tokyo.

The number of serious cases in the capital requiring ventilators or extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, also known as an ECMO lung bypass machine, dropped by four from the previous day to 31.

Of the 29 cases, seven patients, the most, were in their 20s. Three patients were aged 65 or older.
