A pedestrian suffered burns to his face in a chemical attack at Tokyo Metro Co.’s Shirokane-Takanawa Station in Tokyo’s Minato Ward around 9:10 p.m. on Aug. 24, according to police.
The assailant fled from the scene, and authorities said they believe the chemical used in the attack was likely sulfuric acid.
According to the Tokyo Fire Department, a man in his 20s sustained burns to his face and back, and a woman in her 30s who was near the victim also suffered leg injuries when she apparently slipped and fell during the attack.
They remain conscious with non-life-threatening injuries.
The liquid chemical was contained in a small bottle and thrown at the victim near the escalator connecting between the ticket gate and the exit to street level.
Police are searching for the assailant. He is believed to be a middle-aged man in his 40s or 50s and stands about 175 centimeters tall. He was wearing black shoes, a baseball cap and a white mask.
