Tokyo confirmed 1,592 new cases of novel coronavirus infections on Jan. 17, down from 1,809 on the previous day but the highest for a Sunday.

The previous record for a Sunday was 1,494 logged a week ago.

The capital listed 138 patients in serious condition, up two from the previous day.

Tokyo defines serious cases as those requiring a ventilator or a machine called extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), which circulates blood through an artificial lung.
