Tokyo confirmed 1,592 new cases of novel coronavirus infections on Jan. 17, down from 1,809 on the previous day but the highest for a Sunday.
The previous record for a Sunday was 1,494 logged a week ago.
The capital listed 138 patients in serious condition, up two from the previous day.
