The anime film “Demon Slayer the Movie: Mugen Train” got off to an out-of-this-world start, raking in about 4.62 billion yen ($43.8 million) at the box office over three days through Oct. 18.
The figure compares with the record 30.8 billion yen garnered by Hayao Miyazaki’s “Spirited Away,” released in 2011.
The movie, which opened at 403 theaters nationwide on Oct. 16, attracted about 3.42 million moviegoers over the three days.
The number of audience-goers and box-office revenue on Oct. 16 set a weekday record, and those on Oct. 17-18 a weekend record, according to the movie’s distributors, Toho Co. and Aniplex Inc.
Releases of many Hollywood movies have been postponed due to the novel coronavirus pandemic, which is believed to have contributed to the large turnout for “Demon Slayer.”
