The Japan Meteorological Agency is calling on people to be vigilant against heavy rain, strong wind gusts and high waves as Typhoon No. 12 veered toward eastern Japan.
It is expected to lash a wide area from Sept. 24 through 25.
The JMA said the typhoon formed over the sea south of Japan and was moving north-northeast at a speed of 20 kph early on Sept. 23.
As of noon, it had a central barometric pressure of 975 hectopascals and maximum sustained winds of 108 kph near the center.
It was forecast to move north over waters south of Japan and gradually change course eastward with expectations of it being about 260 kilometers east of Iwaki, Fukushima Prefecture, at 9 a.m. on Sept. 25.
Downpours accompanied by lightning are expected in some areas, mainly along the Pacific side of eastern Japan, due to the typhoon and a rain front.
The Tokai region and the Izu Peninsula will likely experience 200 milliliters of rainfall over the 24-hour period through 6 a.m. on Sept. 24. The JMA forecast 150 mm of rain for the Kanto-Koshin region and 80 mm for the Tohoku region over the same period.
The expected rainfall for the 24-hour period through 6 a.m. on Sept. 25 is 200-300 mm in Kanto-Koshin, 100-200 mm in Tohoku and the Izu island chain and 50-100 mm in Tokai.
