Tokyo marked another grim milestone on Aug. 27 as the metropolitan government announced 250 new COVID-19 infections, pushing the total in the capital past 20,000.
The count marked the second day in a row that Tokyo has confirmed more than 200 new infections. The total cases in the capital stands at 20,096.
The Tokyo metropolitan government plans to extend its request for eating and drinking establishments serving alcohol and all karaoke parlors to shorten their business hours for another 15 days beyond the Aug. 31 deadline. The extension applies only to the capital's 23 wards.
The original request to shorten operating hours from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. between Aug. 3 and 31 covers those businesses throughout Tokyo, including the western Tama area.
Tokyo officials are making final arrangements to provide 150,000 yen ($1,414) for operators who abide by the request.
