Japan's capital confirmed 95 new cases of the novel coronavirus on Aug. 24, the Tokyo metropolitan government announced.

It is the first time Tokyo's daily count has fallen below 100 since July 8, when 75 new cases were confirmed.

Twenty-nine patients were in their 20s, while 25 were in their 30s, accounting for 57 percent of the new cases.

Another 14 people who tested positive were in their 40s, 11 in their 50s, and five were in their 60s and 80s.

Three patients were between the ages of 10 and 19. The remaining three were in their 90s.

The Aug. 24 tally largely reflects tests conducted on Aug. 21 that came back positive. A total of 2,912 tests were performed, according to preliminary figures released by Tokyo officials.

That amount is a drop of about 3,900 from the number the capital conducted during the peak of testing on Aug. 11.

The capital as of Aug. 24 had 38 patients hospitalized who were categorized as being in serious condition.

The number fell by one from the previous day, but was up 2.5 times from Aug. 1 when 15 patients were listed in serious condition.

The Tokyo metropolitan government defines seriously ill cases of the novel coronavirus as patients on ventilators or extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, or ECMO lung bypass machines.
