A cluster infection has sickened half the employees of a company in Tokyo as the capital continued to see a recent rise in COVID-19 cases.

On Aug. 22, metropolitan officials reported 256 newly confirmed cases in Tokyo, including 36 patients who apparently contracted the virus from others at the workplace.

Of the 36, 28 were all younger than 40 and worked for the same company where an outbreak had been reported.

The company's total workforce of 100 employees all worked on the same floor of an office building.

The 28 new infections reported on Aug. 22 brought the total of patients with the company in question to around 50, according to metropolitan officials.

The same day, Osaka Prefecture registered 136 new cases, its fifth straight day of exceeding the 100 mark.

The daily count of confirmed cases was 69 in Aichi Prefecture, 68 in Fukuoka Prefecture and 31 in Okinawa Prefecture.

The national tally of new infections totaled 985 on Aug. 22. The same day, six patients died from COVID-19.
