Tokyo confirmed 222 new cases of novel coronavirus infection on Aug. 12, the third straight day of a figure below the 300 mark.
The capital recorded 197 cases on Aug. 10 and 188 cases on Aug. 11.
Officials of the Tokyo metropolitan government said the daily case count reflects test results from about three days prior.
They said the latest number of daily tests on Aug. 9 were 1,132. But there were more than 5,000 tests done each day between Aug. 3 and 6. The case numbers that followed three days after those dates were higher than 300 on each day.
Tokyo added 222 new coronavirus patients across a wide range of ages on Aug. 12, but the bulk were young adults.
Seventy-eight patients who tested positive were in their 20s, and 57 patients were in their 30s. Both age groups accounted for about 61 percent of the total. At the same time, 33 new infected patients were in their 40s and 19 were in their 50s.
