Uniqlo’s paper shopping bags (Provided by Fast Retailing Co.)
Fast Retailing Co., operator of the Uniqlo clothing chain, will start charging for its paper shopping bags from Sept. 1.
It will charge 10 yen (9 cents), including tax, per bag at all its Uniqlo and GU stores nationwide.
It became mandatory from July for stores to charge for plastic shopping bags. Because the company’s bags are made of paper, it was under no obligation to charge for them.
However, the global apparel maker says it will bring in the new bag fee as part of an effort to reduce waste and encourage environmentally friendly behavior.
