NAHA--Thirty-two new COVID-19 cases were reported at U.S. Marine Corps Air Station Futenma in Ginowan, the Okinawa prefectural government said on July 13.
The latest infections brought the overall cases among U.S. Marines in the prefecture to 94.
The report came on the heels of the announcement by the prefectural government on July 11 that 61 new infections have been confirmed at the Futenma base and Camp Hansen, another U.S. Marine facility in the prefecture, over five days through that day.
Prefectural officials said they believe cluster infections have occurred at the two bases, which the U.S. military said have been placed in lockdown.
On July 11, Okinawa Governor Denny Tamaki criticized the U.S. military, saying he doubted it took proper measures to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.
