Tokyo shattered its daily record for new COVID-19 cases on July 10, with 243, as the resurgence of the novel coronavirus continued in the capital, sources said.

The number exceeded the 224 new cases confirmed the previous day, the first time the daily figure topped 200 in more than two months.

“I believe we have reached a stage when we need to be more cautious,” Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike said at a news conference on July 10, referring to the surge in new infections that started early this month.

From July 2, Tokyo reported six straight days with more than 100 new COVID-19 cases.

Although the tally dipped below 100 on July 8, a then record 224 cases were confirmed the next day. The previous high was 206 confirmed on April 17, when the capital was still under a state of emergency related to the novel coronavirus pandemic.

The recent increase has fueled speculation on whether Koike will again seek restrictions on business activities and movement by the public.

“While an analysis will still be required regarding the figures, we will implement measures for those areas where the analysis has been completed,” she told reporters earlier on July 10.
