The death toll from torrential rains in Kyushu that started over the weekend rose to 60 as 17 people remained missing.
Fifty-eight people died in hard-hit Kumamoto Prefecture as of July 9. The remaining two deaths were reported in Fukuoka Prefecture.
Heavy rain continued until early on July 8 in many parts of Kyushu, Japan’s southernmost main island, and five people went missing in the city of Yufu, Oita Prefecture.
The seasonal rain front also brought heavy rain to parts of the Honshu main island, particularly in Nagano and Gifu prefectures, on July 8.
In the cities of Takayama and Gero, Gifu Prefecture, 2,229 people from 905 households were left isolated due to landslides and other damage as of 10 a.m. on July 9.
Heavy rain is expected in wide areas from western to eastern Japan through July 10.
