Not a single fatality linked to the novel coronavirus was reported on June 7, the first time in three months for only new infections to be reported.
The death toll to date stands at 919.
Health authorities confirmed 39 new cases of infection as of 9 p.m. the same day, bringing the total to 17,260.
Tokyo saw 14 new cases, the seventh consecutive day of a double-digit figure.
Six of those cases were associated with nightlife establishments, such as clubs and bars where hosts or hostesses entertain customers. Of those cases, three people became infected at the same karaoke bar.
A “Tokyo Alert” issued June 2 by the metropolitan government urges residents to be especially vigilant about a second wave of infections.
Tokyo authorities are concerned about average daily infections in a week hitting 21.0, as it has set a benchmark of below 20.0.
In the week just passed, the rate of growth in infections from the previous week came to 1.73, higher than the benchmark of below 1.0.
