Nine new cases of COVID-19 infection were confirmed in Tokyo on May 15, the first time for a single digit figure since March 22.
On May 14, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe lifted the state of emergency over the new coronavirus outbreak in 39 prefectures, but Tokyo was not included.
The capital remains one of eight prefectures that require special precautions against a further spread of the coronavirus and the state of emergency for those areas will continue until May 31.
As of May 14, Tokyo had a total of 5,027 infections and 212 deaths related to the novel coronavirus.
