Health authorities confirmed 188 new coronavirus cases on April 30, bringing the country's total to 14,306.

Figures released as of 9 p.m. showed that Sapporo in Hokkaido chalked up a record daily high of 27 new infection cases.

Across the nation, 22 new deaths were reported, raising the total to 457.

In Shizuoka, a man in his 70s was found to have stopped breathing at a residential facility for the elderly. He was rushed to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

His body tested positive for COVID-19. A city official said the man had been displaying symptoms, such as coughing, since around April 25.
