The Tokyo metropolitan government announced on April 17 that a record 201 people had newly tested positive for the novel coronavirus in the capital.
Along with being the highest daily total for Tokyo, it marked the first time that any prefecture in Japan has topped the 200 mark for new COVID-19 cases in one day.
The record number came one week after Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike announced a wide-ranging list of businesses asked to close in the capital to prevent a further spread of the coronavirus.
The total number of COVID-19 cases in Tokyo is now at 2,796.
