NAHA--A popular retail market and tourist destination here has closed for two weeks after a worker was confirmed to be infected with the new coronavirus.
A female sales clerk at the Makishi Public Market tested positive on April 4, and the market was closed at 5:30 p.m. the same day, Naha city officials said.
The woman had been off work since March 27 after complaining of fever and muscle aches the previous day.
The market is currently being rebuilt, and dozens of its retail outlets were operating in a two-story, temporary facility about 100 meters from the original location.
Four other individuals in Okinawa Prefecture were confirmed to be infected with the coronavirus on April 4, bringing the total in the prefecture to 17.
The Makishi Public Market, which had its origins in a postwar black market, has become a major tourist attraction in the capital of Okinawa Prefecture. The market is scheduled to reopen in a new building in fiscal 2022.
