Seventy-four foreign passengers aboard the quarantined cruise ship Diamond Princess who returned home on flights chartered by their respective governments tested positive for the new coronavirus, the health ministry announced on March 4.

The ministry tallied the numbers released by governments of affected countries and regions as of March 3.

The data shows the United States has the largest number of such passengers at 45, followed by Australia with 10, Hong Kong with eight, Britain with four, Israel and Russia with three each, and Taiwan with one.

The ministry said the figures include those whose infections were confirmed before leaving the virus-stricken ship as well as those who tested negative or didn’t undergo a diagnostic test before disembarking.

“We need to thoroughly examine the data,” a ministry official said.

All the 3,700 or so passengers and crew members who were stranded aboard the quarantined cruise ship docked for nearly a month at Yokohama Port have disembarked.
