Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea will close from Feb. 29 through March 15 as a measure to help stop the new coronavirus from spreading, the operator of the theme parks said Feb. 28.
Oriental Land Co. said it took the step after Prime Minister Shinzo Abe urged organizers to cancel, postpone or reduce the size of sports and cultural events for the next two weeks.
The company said it will consider whether to restart both theme parks located in Urayasu, Chiba Prefecture, on March 16.
The Ikspiari mall adjacent to the Tokyo Disney Resort will also be closed. Hotels around the resort plan to continue operating with some operational changes.
Ticket holders can obtain refunds or have the expiration dates of their tickets extended. Further details on the closure can be found on the official website for the theme parks.
The operator of Universal Studios Japan in Osaka also said on Feb. 28 that the movie-themed amusement park will close from Feb. 29 through March 15 due to concerns over the coronavirus.
