Sharp Corp. will start selling a fifth-generation (5G)-compatible smartphone in the spring, the first Japanese manufacturer to do so, the company announced Feb. 17.
Sharp's Aquos R5G smartphone will go on sale simultaneously with the start of 5G service in the country.
Japan's four leading cellphone carriers will start offering the 5G service from spring.
Wireless networks to support the next-generation 5G, which enables users to quickly download high-definition movies, are already provided in more than 20 countries.
It only takes about four seconds to download a two-hour movie using the 5G phone, according to Sharp, which under the current 4G network, sometimes takes more than two minutes.
Japan's cellphone carriers have yet to announce prices for the Sharp 5G phone, but they are expected to be similar to current prices of other luxury mobile devices.
