OSAKA--A world-class theme park here is dishing up frights for adults as the spooky season draws near, with attractions that focus less on flashy outfits and more on the finer things.

Finer, but still creepy.

Universal Studios Japan has increased the number of events emphasizing low-key settings and immersive experiences under the theme “Otona Halloween” (Halloween for adults).

This year's highlight, "Hotel Albert II - Requiem-," has visitors make their way through a decrepit luxury hotel for a horror-story experience.

The attraction mainly targets women in their late 20s or older. Participants are encouraged to dress up in black lacy clothes or other attire, rather than donning extravagant costumes.

Initially, the theme park's Halloween events were mainly aimed at young people and children who tend to enjoy watching parades featuring special effects makeup and a variety of costumes.

However, in recent years, the park operator started receiving feedback from female patrons who said they were not in an age group where they would enjoy sporting flashy costumes or engaging in cosplay.

The company said it came up with adult-oriented events to fill the niche since last year.

Visitors to the Hotel Albert II will be served a free cocktail or other drink in a luxurious lounge. Entry is limited to senior high school students or older.

Admission is 5,075 yen ($47.20), excluding tax, though a representative emphasized that, “The high-quality atmosphere has been well-received.”

The horror-themed Park Side Grille: Cursed Rose Banquet restaurant, which was introduced for the first time this year (3,704 yen, including dinner, excluding tax), is also targeted mainly at adults. Preschoolers are not allowed to enter.

Guests can dine while immersed in the creepy surroundings of a Western-style mansion where horrific events apparently occurred in the past, according to the theme park.
