Sukiyabashi Jiro, the sushi restaurant in Tokyo where U.S. President Barack Obama and Prime Minister Shinzo Abe dined together in 2014, was dropped from the Michelin Guide for the first time in a decade.

The reason for the omission from Michelin Guide Tokyo 2020 had nothing to do with the food at the restaurant in the Ginza district of Chuo Ward. Sukiyabashi Jiro, which has received the top three-star rating in the guide since 2008, no longer accepts general reservations because of overwhelming demand, making it ineligible for an assessment.

The Sushi Saito restaurant in Tokyo’s Minato Ward, which has received three stars each year since 2010, was not listed in the latest guide for the same reason.

Michelin Guide Tokyo 2020 will be released in Japan on Nov. 29.

Nihon Michelin Tire Co. on Nov. 26 announced assessment results of restaurants and accommodation facilities in the capital.

It said 11 restaurants received three stars, 48 were given two-star ratings, and 167 were awarded one star.

Kadowaki, a Japanese cuisine restaurant in Minato Ward, was awarded three stars, up from two in the 2019 guide.

Inua, a restaurant in Chiyoda Ward operated by a two-star restaurant in Denmark, received two stars in its debut in the guide.
