Robots that act as store staff and an eatery that serves insects are just two of the new additions to the Shibuya Parco shopping complex that reopens in Tokyo on Nov. 22.
The facility in Tokyo's Shibuya district, famous as a hip fashion hub for Japan's youth, was shut for three years and renovated to attract a wider range of customers, with an emphasis on digital technology.
In addition to refurbishing the complex, Shibuya Parco has shifted its focus from young Japanese clientele to fashion-conscious customers no matter their age or nationality.
The mall operated by Parco Co. boasts 193 stores concentrating on fashion outlets and restaurants.
The company's goal is for annual sales by all tenants of about 20 billion yen ($184 million).
Its clothing shops encompass a wide range of genres, including high-fashion, Victorian-inspired Lolita fashion and unisex outlets. Customers can dine on insects at one restaurant.
Parco is going all-out to enhance customers’ convenience while shopping.
Autonomous robots about waist-height resembling iPads on wheels run through areas of the building. As part of its effort to cultivate a futuristic image, Parco is using them on a trial basis when shoppers need to contact staff.
Customers can use the touch screens to communicate with staff if they are far away from store counters.
Shibuya Parco will also provide art and culture information to entice customers to visit.
The shopping complex contains cafes and grocery stores exhibiting modern art or selling pottery.
Customers can also view 3-D art and have Augmented Reality experiences at the mall.
A Parco Co. representative said the company hopes to "offer new experiences to shoppers at our commercial complex through digital technology.”
Shibuya Parco opened in 1973 but ceased operations from August 2016, citing a need to upgrade the facilities. The new complex combines the two buildings that made up the original mall.
The mall has 10 stories above ground and three basement floors. Sales floors are located from B1 to the ninth floor, as well as part of the 10th floor. Total retail floor space comes to 42,000 square meters.
