Nintendo Co. is seeking to power up profits with its first official brick-and-mortar store in Japan, offering a large assortment of game-related character products.
Zelda socks or a Mario T-shirt, anyone?
Nintendo Tokyo, located in the renovated Shibuya Parco shopping complex in the bustling Shibuya district, will open its doors on Nov. 22.
It will be the company's second directly operated store following one in New York.
Mugs, notebooks, T-shirts and bags based on popular Nintendo characters and designs are among the 1,000 or so goods available at the store for souvenirs and daily use.
While similar products have been available at other shops through licensing agreements, about half of those at the new store are original Nintendo creations.
"We are seeking to create a place where people can discover Nintendo characters and games other than the consoles themselves," Shuntaro Furukawa, president of Nintendo, said.
As game consoles will also be sold at the shop, the company said it plans to hold events allowing visitors to play the latest titles.
The brick-and-mortar shop is one of the company's main strategies to shore up profits, as sales of game consoles tend to depend on the popularity of the titles.
The company will open Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios Japan in Osaka next year. The main attraction will be a Mario Kart game, allowing visitors to enter the world of the popular series.
