HACHINOHE, Aomori Prefecture--A teenage boy slashed an elementary school girl walking home from school here Nov. 12, inflicting cuts to her neck, say police who arrested him on suspicion of attempted murder.
The 14-year-old junior high school student approached the girl from behind at about 4:40 p.m. He told investigators he had intended to kill her with a knife, indicating it could have been anybody, sources said.
Aomori prefectural police announced the arrest the following day.
The girl suffered a wound about 10 centimeters long and up to 1 cm deep that will require three weeks of medical care to recover.
Her injury is not life-threatening.
Police identified the boy based on a witness report and security camera footage of the area around the crime scene. After his arrest at 11 p.m. on the day of the incident, officers found clothing at his home that matched the footage and reports from the girl.
Police also found several knives in his room. They are trying to ascertain a motive for the attack.
