A leading confectionery maker has created a cookie straw that it hopes users will find as delicious as it is environmentally friendly.

Bourbon will start offering Cornet Cookie to restaurants and other businesses on Jan. 21, as part of the company's efforts to address the widespread problem of plastic pollution.

The cylindrical cookies, aimed mainly at food and beverage establishments, are about 1 centimeter in diameter and 20 cm long.

Bourbon, based in Kashiwazaki, Niigata Prefecture, said it enhanced the product's water resistance by adjusting the percentage of oil and fat in the dough.

Moves away from conventional plastic straws are gaining traction across the globe, with the resulting waste considered among the top sources of marine pollution.
