Princess Kako, the second daughter of Crown Prince Fumihito and Crown Princess Kiko, celebrated her 25th birthday on Dec. 29 following an eventful year that saw her graduate from a university and take on increasing public duties.
The Imperial Household Agency released information concerning Kako over the past year. She is the niece of Emperor Naruhito.
Kako graduated in March from International Christian University in Tokyo and in September made her first official visit abroad as a member of the imperial family when she visited Austria and Hungary.
Agency officials explained that Kako prepared for her trip through briefings by experts about the history and culture of the two nations as well as their ties with Japan. She also read up on those nations to prepare for her visit.
A major purpose of the trip was to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between Japan and the two nations.
In July, Kako spoke at a national high school equestrian tournament. She also attended a national competition among high school students involving sign language in September and also addressed that gathering.
In December, Kako and her younger brother, Prince Hisahito, attended a national speech contest in Tokyo for junior high school students. That was the first time the two siblings were on their own in fulfilling an official role.
Regarding the coming year, agency officials said Kako would continue to respond to invitations for her attendance submitted by organizers of various events.
