A long-established confectioner specializing in "an" bean paste has put a novel twist on the traditional sweet for those with a soft spot for cookies.

An de Cookies sold at Toshoan contain fresh paste made from navy beans, kneaded into rice dough. The unlikely combination has helped the product become the shop's main offering.

Of the five regular flavors, “matcha” (powdered green tea) is the most popular among tourists. Seasonal offerings that change every two months include “yuzu” citrus, chocolate, cherry and four other flavors.

Address: 709 Shimo-Hachimonjicho, Horikawa Sanjo-sagaru, Nakagyo Ward, Kyoto.
