Completion of a new Self-Defense Forces air base in Kagoshima Prefecture will be delayed for three years until the end of March 2030, the Defense Ministry announced on Sept. 10.

Shipping of construction materials to the site on Mageshima island in Nishinoomote in the prefecture didn’t proceed as scheduled due to high waves and strong winds.

Insufficient supplies of materials and staffers resulting from the Noto Peninsula earthquake on Jan. 1 also led to the delay.

When completed, the base will host field landing practices for the U.S. military’s aircraft carrier-based planes and drills by SDF aircraft.

The base will be equipped with two runways, an air traffic control tower, storage facilities and SDF members’ housing quarters.

Construction of the main facilities of the base started in January 2023 and was scheduled to be completed in about four years at the initial stage.
