GAMAGORI, Aichi Prefecture—Three members of a family of five were confirmed dead after a landslide plowed into their house after heavy rain.
Two daughters, both in their 40s, were rescued but one remains in serious condition. Their parents in their 70s and brother in his 30s were killed.
The landslide occurred on the night of Aug. 27 in the Takenoyacho-Okugo district of Gamagori.
The eldest daughter made an emergency call at 10:10 p.m. on Aug. 27 and was rescued about two hours later with minor injuries, according to city officials.
The second daughter was rescued in the morning of Aug. 28 with serious injuries.
The mother was unconscious when she was pulled from the debris. The mother, her husband and their son were all confirmed dead on Aug. 28.
Gamagori city and other sources said 110 members of the city’s fire department and the Self-Defense Forces were involved in the rescue operation.
