MATSUYAMA--Three bodies were recovered July 13 from the site of a landslide in a residential area here caused by heavy rains.

The landslip that hit northeast of Matsuyama Castle around 3:50 a.m. on July 12 engulfed a home where a family of three lived and damaged other buildings, authorities said.

The victims are presumed to be a man in his 90s, a woman in her 80s and a man in his 40s who are listed as missing, although police are still trying to identify the bodies that were discovered just after 2 p.m. on July 13.

A chunk of mountain slope about 100 meters high and 50 meters wide came crashing down, city officials said.

Authorities said 213 millimeters of rain fell in Matsuyama from July 10 through the morning of July 12.

The amount of rainfall is almost the same as for the whole month of July in an average year in the city, according to the Matsuyama Local Meteorological Observatory.
