Someiyoshino cherry trees started blooming in central Tokyo on March 29, the Japan Meteorological Agency announced.
The JMA’s Tokyo Regional Headquarters made the announcement after a staff member visually confirmed that a sample tree at war-related Yasukuni Shrine in Chiyoda Ward had 11 blossoms.
Although the trees have tended to bloom earlier in recent years due to global warming, this was the latest in the last 10 years. It was also 15 days later than last year and five days later than normal.
The latest bloom in Tokyo was observed on April 11, 1984.
