The “Jewel of Shonan,” an event to illuminate Enoshima Island and nearby Katase Beach in winter, is now in full swing around Enoshima Samuel Cocking Garden, a botanical plot in Fujisawa City, Kanagawa Prefecture.
The garden is named after a British individual who lived in Japan in the Meiji Era (1868-1912) and won renown for the large greenhouse and gardens he developed in Enoshima, a popular day trip destination from Tokyo.
“Enoshima Sea Candle,” a lighthouse with an observation deck, is lit up from 5 p.m., along with other structures. The area is popular with visitors eager to snap selfies and touch the illuminations.
City officials said the bulbs in the sea candles were changed this year so they twinkle. Also, more chandeliers were installed in the illuminated tunnel “Shonan Chandelier.”
The event is open until February 29.
