Hiratsuka’s Shonan Tanabata Star Festival, one of the nation’s most famous, is being held over three days until July 9, and more than 1 million visitors are expected.

The colorful festivities feature approximately 90 massive Tanabata floats decked out in lights, each standing around 10 meters high, that line a shopping street north of JR Hiratsuka Station in Hiratsuka City in Kanagawa Prefecture.

The nighttime festival is being held for the first time since 2019 because of the novel coronavirus pandemic. It closes at 8 p.m. on July 8, and runs until 7 p.m. on July 9.
