Narita Airport, one of key gateways to Japan, was packed with Japanese heading overseas for the year-end holidays and foreign residents returning to their home countries for vacations after travel restrictions were largely lifted in October.

A company employee from Yokohama was taking his family to Bali, Indonesia, by taking a vacation earlier than usual.

“It is a lot cheaper, compared with a trip to the United States where prices of goods are sharply rising,” he said of his travel plans to the internationally renowned resort island. “I’m going to enjoy surfing while my wife and daughter kick back and relax.”

Narita International Airport Corp. estimated that 618,500 travelers would use the airport for entry and departure between Dec. 23 and Jan. 5, 2023.

The figure is about 12.5 times the number for the same period last season.

But it is still 45 percent of the figure for the same period between 2019 and 2020, before the novel coronavirus pandemic struck.
