KYOTO--Hundreds of maple trees are lit up as part of an annual illumination scenic event put on by Sagano Scenic Railway Co. so passengers can enjoy the gorgeous hues of autumn foliage.

The Sagano Romantic Train sightseeing route between Arashiyama Torokko and Kameoka Torokko stations passes by approximately 1,000 maple trees to show off their changing colors in an atmospheric setting.

Late-November marks the beginning of the best time to view the spectacular autumn foliage. The service will operate until Dec. 18.

The railway operator added around 100 lights to illuminate scenic spots along the tracks last year as an added attraction due to falling tourism numbers caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. This year, it added another 50 or so lights to bring the total to around 950.

The other side of the Katsuragawa river is illuminated as well so fall foliage is reflected on the water surface across a wider stretch than usual.

The event starts at 4:30 p.m. as daylight begins to fade.

Usually, the last service leaves the station between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m.

One-way tickets for adults cost 880 yen ($6.30), and all seats are reserved.

With fewer same-day tickets available, the company recommends that passengers make reservations through the e5489 site run by West Japan Railway Co. (JR West).
