The weeks-long lull in new COVID-19 cases appears to be coming to an end, with health officials sounding the alarm that infections are once again on the rise across Japan.
As of 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 18, officials confirmed 43,272 people were newly infected with the novel coronavirus, exceeding 40,000 for the first time in five days.
That is 30,208 more than the previous Tuesday.
The daily tally has surpassed the previous week’s figure for seven consecutive days.
Officials also confirmed 72 deaths.
By prefecture, Tokyo led in new COVID-19 patients with 4,213, up 2,709 from the previous week. Hokkaido followed with 4,008, and Osaka Prefecture was next with 3,314.
The daily tally for Tokyo has now exceeded the previous week’s figure for seven consecutive days.
For the week until Oct. 18, the average daily count of new patients in the capital was 3,482.4. That is 132.6 percent of the previous week’s figure, which was 2,626.6.
