Tokyo confirmed 37,767 new COVID-19 cases on Aug. 5, up 953 from a week ago, exceeding 30,000 for the fourth consecutive day.
The deaths of 21 patients in their 40s to 90s were also reported in the capital, marking the first time the daily death toll topped 20 since March 18.
The daily average of new cases over the week through Aug. 5 in Tokyo was 32,836.1, or 104 percent of the average for the preceding week.
People in their 20s represented the largest age group of the new patients, at 7,924, followed by 6,684 in their 30s, 6,501 in their 40s and 4,855 in their 50s.
Additionally, 3,574 people aged 65 or older tested positive for the novel coronavirus.
The occupancy rate of hospital beds for COVID-19 patients in Tokyo was 57.5 percent, while 31.2 percent of hospital beds for severely ill patients were filled, officials said.
The Tokyo metropolitan government said it would consider asking the central government to issue a state of emergency for the capital if the occupancy rate of beds for seriously ill patients rises between 30 and 40 percent.
