Tokyo on Aug. 3 logged 38,940 new cases of COVID-19, up 9,904 from the previous Wednesday, the first time in three days that the capital recorded more cases than a week ago.

Metropolitan officials also confirmed 12 related deaths involving patients in their 20s through 100s.

The weekly average of new infection cases in Tokyo per day until Aug. 3 was 33,423.9, which was 111 percent of the previous week’s figure.

Patients in their 40s made up the largest age group with 6,979 cases, followed by 6,679 in their 20s, 6,674 in their 30s and 5,400 in their 50s.

There were also 4,105 new patients aged 65 or over.

Officials said the occupancy rate of hospital beds for COVID-19 patients in Tokyo remained high, at 55.4 percent.

The occupancy rate of hospital beds for severely ill patients was 29.5 percent, close to the metropolitan government’s 30-to-40-percent criteria for considering asking the central government to issue a state of emergency for the capital.

Authorities also said 35 patients, up one from Aug. 2, were serious cases requiring ventilators or ECMO heart-lung bypass machines.

In other areas, prefectures in the Kyushu region reported record daily cases on Aug. 3 with 4,414 in Kumamoto Prefecture, 2,605 in Nagasaki Prefecture, 2,424 in Oita Prefecture, 3,126 in Miyazaki Prefecture and 6,180 in Okinawa Prefecture.

Yamaguchi Prefecture also logged a record number of daily cases at 2,081.
