Unstable atmospheric conditions brought downpours mainly to the Tohoku region on July 13, causing flooding in some rivers in Miyagi Prefecture.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is urging residents to stay vigilant as the heavy rain raised the risk of mudslides.
Sendai’s Izumi Ward received 161.5 millimeters of rainfall over a 12-hour period, setting a record for July.
The city of Tamura in Fukushima Prefecture recorded an intense hourly rainfall of 44 mm.
The torrential rains caused rivers in Osaki, northern Miyagi, to overflow, inundating some parts of downtown areas and rice paddies.
The Sendai city government ordered 321,584 people from 159,879 households to evacuate amid a heightened risk of mudslides.
The JMA expects that atmospheric conditions will remain unstable from July 14 onward due to a cold air mass over the Japanese archipelago and warm, damp air flowing into the area, causing heavy rain across Japan.
The expected rainfall for the 24-hour period through 6 p.m. on July 14 is up to 120 mm in the Chugoku region, 80 mm in the northern Kyushu and Hokuriku regions, 70 mm in the Kinki region and 60 mm in the Tohoku region.
