Tokyo reported 151 new COVID-19 cases on Jan. 4, up 105 from a week ago and surpassing the 150 mark for the first time since October, according to metropolitan health officials.
The last time the daily count topped 150 was on Oct. 3, when Tokyo recorded 161 new infections.
The daily average of new cases over the week until Jan. 4 came to 90.7, an increase of 128.5 percent from the preceding week.
The number of serious cases--patients requiring a ventilator or ECMO heart-lung bypass machine--stood at two, up from one on Jan. 3.
No new deaths from the coronavirus were reported in the capital.
